The first lore blog for Guild Wars 3 is here, and it’s a big one. On June 11, 2026, ArenaNet started pulling back the curtain on the setting for their upcoming MMO, confirming where and when this new chapter takes place.

The game begins on the continent of Orr, over a thousand years before the events of Guild Wars Reforged. That puts it in a period before the human gods left the world, after a recent usurpation of the God of Death. It’s also pre-First Guild War, with rival guilds getting restless and the Order of the Vael struggling to keep up.

Why Orr Matters

For longtime fans, this isn’t just a random pick. Orr has threads running through the whole franchise. From the charr invasion and that mysterious vizier in Guild Wars Reforged to the sunken ruins raised by Zhaitan in Guild Wars 2, it’s always been a source of big questions. The blog lays it out:

“Orr is connected to the disappearance of the human gods from our world, the origins of the Guild Wars themselves, and the name behind the entire franchise.”

It’s also tied to Grenth’s rise, Dhuum’s fall, and the whole Abaddon arc from Guild Wars: Nightfall. After 21 years of Tyrian stories, most of the lore about this era is still unwritten. ArenaNet says they’ve released very little public information about this timeline, leaving more questions than answers.

What This Means

The devs frame this as an origin story. They want both veterans and newcomers to explore the mysteries of Orr before the Exodus of the Gods. Plenty of untold stories are buried here, and that’s the point — players get to unravel them together. The first blog is short on gameplay details, but it makes one thing clear: Guild Wars 3 isn’t revisiting familiar ground. It’s digging into the parts of Tyria’s history that have only ever been hinted at.
