The post-apocalyptic survival game Rooted is rolling out Alpha Phase 2 features for its testers, even if the full launch hasn’t happened yet. The developer shared a preview on October 30, 2024, covering a bunch of new systems.

A large chunk of the open world is now accessible. Over a dozen points of interest are scattered across the map — some are near-final, others still in blockout, but they show the direction things are heading. You can also gather resources and build cabins, houses, or bases depending on how ambitious you feel. The developer says they’re actively building out the crafting system and adding more to it in the coming weeks.

Drones are in the game now. You’ll find them scattered around the world, and they let you explore faster from the air. Spot something cool from above? You can drop a marker and find it later on the ground. There’s also a growing bacterial threat. The apocalypse-causing bacteria is spreading, so you’ll need an antidote or a respirator mask to explore contaminated areas safely.

Swimming is here too, as a warm-up for fishing planned in Alpha Phase 3. More lakes and rivers are coming. Vehicles are creeping in as mid-game items, but alpha testers already get a special Alpha Car for faster travel. There’s also a forklift that can get you into hard-to-reach spots. The developer plans a formal devlog when Alpha Phase 2 launches officially, but this is the sneak peek for now.
