In a July 16, 2026 dev diary, Keen Software House revealed deformed materials for Space Engineers 2. This new feature aims to make damage look and feel more physical than in the original game.
What Changes With Deformed Materials
In the first Space Engineers, armor blocks could deform when hit, but other blocks only showed damage through preset states. Space Engineers 2 goes further. Now, blocks change both their shape and their surface appearance after an impact.
“When a block is hit, new impact-specific materials and textures can appear on its surface, making damage more visible, readable, and believable.”
This means you won’t just see a dent or a pre-baked crack. The game generates new textures and materials on the fly, specific to each hit.
The Goal: Heavier, More Satisfying Destruction
The dev diary makes the intention clear. They want impacts to feel heavier and damage to look more physical. The world should respond in a way that feels both realistic and satisfying.
- Damage becomes more readable — you can see exactly where and how hard something was hit.
- It’s more believable — the surface reacts uniquely to each impact.
- The overall feeling of destruction improves, making combat and collisions more visceral.
